![]() Engaging with bosses revealed even more of the world’s dense, otherwise inscrutable lore. Of course, I needed to fight them in order to gain runes and level up - but I also noticed how these creatures fit into the game’s storytelling. I missed Stormveil Castle because I ran around the perimeter, straight to Liurnia of the Lakes, through a rain of projectiles from a giant lobster, and into the loving hands of death.Īll the while, the game’s enemies exerted a curious pull on me. This is also how I initially played Elden Ring. Making treks to the nearest bench to try another charm loadout, held back by my relatively limited collection. A typical battle attempt looked like this: returning to the Soul Sanctum to awaken the Soul Master with my trusty Dream Nail. I’d dodge through sections, whenever possible, avoiding the need to heal rather than gathering Soul (the game’s version of mana, used for healing or spellcasting). I mostly dashed and slashed through regions, listened for the calls of grubs, and haphazardly updated my growing map. I didn’t feel like I could actually defeat them, given the game’s intimidating reputation - I was content to simply enjoy the elegant dance of the Mantis Lords’ attacks, while accepting that I was outclassed. But they also intimidated me, so I tended to leave optional bosses behind. Bosses were a thrill beating them came with excellent rewards, like accessing new areas or adding a new charm to my collection. I became obsessed with the various hidden entryways. Whereas other Metroidvanias might make a player double back often, Hollow Knight’s interwoven regions create the impression of constant forward, if circuitous, movement. I’m typically an exploration, puzzling, and platforming video game enjoyer. Instead, I set the game aside for four years - until Elden Ring, and its extensive online community, finally inspired me to pick it back up again. (Writing this is my penance.) I could return to it anytime, I told myself. With 30 hours under my belt, I declared Hollow Knight one of my favorite games, and became that person who won’t shut up about it. I got completely lost (and utterly disgusted) while fighting the Flukemarm, the enormous, grunt-spewing Royal Waterways boss, eventually bouncing off of the game altogether.īut I couldn’t stop thinking about my time in Hallownest - the sad little bugs and their decrepit kingdom, Myla’s haunting mining song, or Bretta’s sweet blush. ![]() I noped out of Deepnest, thanks to an abiding fear of spiders that kept making me shriek and drop my Switch like a hot potato. ![]() I never attempted to fight the Dreamers and barely scraped through a few of the Warrior Dream fights, much less the Dream Nail variants of slain bosses. In the next area, drop down the bottom of the shaft, then use Desolate Dive to break through the ground and find the first area Bench.I didn’t beat Hollow Knight on my first playthrough in 2018. Once you drop into The Royal Waterways, head left and drop down, then take the left exit. With the Simple Key we found on our way to Soul Master, and the Lumafly Lantern from Sly’s shop in Dirtmouth (1800 Geo), we are prepared to descend into The Royal Waterways. Step right and you’ll find a mechanism which requires a Simple Key to open. Now that you are outside the shop of Relic Seeker Lemm, sell any relics you have, then take the elevator down to the ground floor. Once you reach the bottom, head left and drop through the exit in the floor. On the next screen, hop down the right side of the shaft and drop all the way down, then drop down the elevator shaft on your left. Head back down to the previous area and take the elevator down to the bottom, then head down and take the exit in the bottom of the right side of the screen. Head to the far left, hop up the shaft and into the next area, then rest at the Bench. Head left through the area where you fought the first Soul Twister and into the next area. Head right, drop off the ledge, and take the exit at the bottom of the screen. Once you step off, head to the right and take the next elevator down to the bottom. ![]() Climb to the top of the area, then Desolate Dive through the glass and head right.ĭesolate Dive through the next glass fixture you see and you’ll arrive in the area where you fought the Soul Warrior miniboss earlier. Pass under the body of Soul Master, past another Soul collector, and into the next area on the right. Head through it and continue through the area towards the right. Dash and wall jump to reach the ledge, then hit the lever and wall jump up the walls to the right until you reach the exit at the top of the shaft. You’ll land in another area filled with Mistakes, so clear them out and climb the platforms on the right.
